An Inside Job

I am consistently surprised by all the effort many of us expend to try to clean up our behavior despite a lack of real success. We seemingly do not understand that outer expression is nothing but a demonstration of our inner state. And that any enduring change can only come from an inside job.

My experiences with others trying to overcome their flaws teaches me that we are profoundly resistant to inner exploration. We are virtually certain that we know ourselves well and that all we need to address is outside us.

I am very empathetic. I once heard, “Your mind is a dangerous place. Don’t go in there alone.”

Granted, our insides can be challenging terrain. Yet if in fact it is there we must work upon ourselves, no one else can enter. Therefore, to change anything…start within.
