Violence on the Inside

I am often struck by our failure to understand that the real issue with regard to violence involves our insides not our behavior. By the time someone is expressing their anger, disagreement or frustration by inflicting it on someone it’s already too late. Once we have come to these inner states, the only question that remains is exactly how someone will pay the price.

Here is the principle. Anytime we believe we have been wronged, whether real or imagined, we will act it out on someone or in some way. So the cycle of violence begins in what and how we perceive. That’s why many spiritual teachings urge us to attend to what is within us. There is no other place where a solution can ultimately be found.

The kingdom of God is within us. Without some attention and effort, so is violence.
