Heartache Manifest

Then Pitcairn made his first call regarding the victims. Matteo Sandoval, the father of Davidson’s victim in Santa Fe, answered on the third ring. Pitcairn introduced himself, told him he was researching the killer and wanted to learn as much as he could about his daughter. He was exceedingly careful to say nothing that might injure the man. While it had been several years since Marissa Sandoval had been brutally raped and strangled in a forlorn corner of the local community college, Pitcairn could sense the pain her father felt. In the brief silence that filled the telephone line, he felt tears of sorrow creep into the corners of his eyes. How horrible it must be to lose your child in such a way, he thought. Loss … is loss … is loss. This man and I are linked by it.

“Mr. Pitcairn, I cannot speak of Marissa still. You must understand I am sure. We still badly miss her.”

“I do understand, and I’m sorry for disturbing you, Mr. Sandoval. I’m terribly sorry for the loss of your daughter.”

“Thank you for inquiring about mi hita. Good afternoon.”

Before the phone was in its cradle, tears rushed down Pitcairn’s face. He leaned back and began to rock himself gently. So much heartache.
